Three
Stages of Assimilation Among Irish Immigrants to America
[ send
me this paper ]
A 12 page paper discussing just how 'American' the Irish are.
Throngs-literally millions-of Irish immigrants poured into
America in the mid-1800s and again toward the end of that
century in response both to rumors of America as the land of
opportunity at a time when their own country not only was in
economic ruin but also could not support all of its people.
There are those who maintain that the Irish were never fully
assimilated into the American culture, but those making such
claims often fail to take into account all applicable factors.

Versions of Indiana History: A Review of the August 1, 1997
Article by Lucy Hoyce Kamau in "History Today"
[ send
me this paper ]
A 5 page critical literature review of "Out of
Harmony" written by Lucy Hoyce Kamau. Discusses the
author's effective illustration that the "official"
history of Posey County Indiana presented by the New Harmony
Museum provides only a distorted view of the communal
Harmonists and Owenists who occupied the area for a brief
period of time in the early 1800s. Stresses that the role of
the common farmer and other occupants of the area is more
adequately presented in the folk history of the area. No other
sources listed.

Immigration Law and Policy
[ send
me this paper ]
A 15 page discussion of historic and contemporary immigration
law and policy. Contends that American immigration law and
policy have evolved considerably over two hundred years of
history. The shortcomings in our current laws and policies
are, in reality, just a continuation of the same bias and
discrimination which have been in place for generations. These
biases exist both in regard to whom we allow entry and to whom
we devote our efforts to apprehending and punishing for
illegal entry. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

"Dirty Laundry" 1865-1900
[ send
me this paper ]
(5 pp) "Dirty laundry" is a collection of those less
than reputable things, which mother always told us not to air
in public. Government "dirty laundry" is often much
more difficult to hide, and usually seems to "smell"
much more when it does appear. As a country, we must have
needed to do a lot of "washing" at the end of the
nineteenth century, as it certainly seems that we had more
than our share of corruption and abuses of power from 1865 -
1900. We will look at some of that political distortion in
this discussion. Some historic dates will be listed, just as
orientation tools. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
