Analysis
of Elaine Tyler May's "Homeward Bound: American Families
in the Cold War Era"
[ send
me this paper ]
A 6 page paper which analyzes Elaine Tyler May's 1988 book
"Homeward Bound: American Families in the Cold War
Era," which asserts that after World War II, Americans
preferred marrying young, perpetuating traditional gender
roles and a secure home life, because of the unsettling
experiences of the Great Depression, World War II and the Cold
War. Specifically assessed are the relative causal influences
of these historical events to determine which factor was the
most responsible for the desire of Cold War America to achieve
security through marriage, tradition and home. No additional
sources are used.

Ann
Banks' "First Person America" And John Ford's
"Stagecoach": Representation Of Social and Economic
Changes In The 1930s
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Ann Banks' "First Person America"
and John Ford's "Stagecoach" individually represent
a changing class-consciousness related to modifying economic
and social conditions of the 1930s. Indeed, it can readily be
argued that imaginative texts do not directly document such
experiences of the 1930s, but rather they indirectly represent
conflicts, tensions, changing values and the ever shifting
conditions of the particular setting. No additional sources
cited.

This 5 page report discusses the life and contributions of
Barbara Jordan to the American political system. In 1966, she
was the first black person elected to the Texas State Senate.
She was young, determined and unabashedly idealistic. Also
renowned for her powerful oratorical skills and her talent for
consensus building, Jordan was elected in 1972 to Congress,
where she served on the House Judiciary Committee during the
Watergate hearings. "My faith in the Constitution is
whole," she declared at the time. "It is complete.
It is total." Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Barry
M. Goldwater
[ send
me this paper ]
( 9 pp.) What makes a conservative? Parents? Upbringing? Past
experiences, Or the ability to put all of those things
together, be aware of history, and come to some personal
conclusions? In the case of Arizona Senator and basic
maverick, Barry M. Goldwater (1909 - 1998), we would have to
say all of the above. In his personal and political memoirs,
With No Apologies, published in 1979, Mr. Goldwater observed
that his run for the presidency in 1964"was like trying
to stand up in a hammock." He said he knew that his
chances of winning were slim and contended, that his fellow
Republicans cost him any chance he might have had during the
battle for the Republican nomination. And in our description
above did we mention, Goldwater as a facilitator of tact?

Billy
Sunday and Will Rogers: Thoughts on Prohibition
[ send
me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Billy Sunday, in one of his numerous
sermons about alcohol being "God's Worst Enemy"
preached that, although some argued personal liberty was at
stake, in reality personal liberty simply meant that a man
could "stand up at the bar and fill his hide so full of
red liquor that he is transformed for the time being into an
irresponsible, dangerous, evil-smelling brute." Rogers,
on the other hand, predicted that "if it was repealed
tomorrow, the lives and habits and morals of the whole country
wouldn't be ruined." These interesting and opposing
viewpoints are presented within this paper. Bibliography lists
3 sources.
