Ritual, Food and Cultural Considerations

There are not many rituals that are common across all cultures and societies. Those rituals associated with the biological realities and necessities are the most likely to share common characteristics across cultures. The type, method of preparation, availability and nutritional value of food is culturally defined as a significator of class, gender and emotion. The fast food industry primarily serves the lower and middle class while the upper class prefers to dine in an atmosphere more accommodating of their social standing. Among the factors to be considered when traveling or providing meals for travelers are the personal preferences of the individuals, the types, times and preparation methods they are accustomed to and to what extent do they want to participate in the local customs and cuisine? This 5 page paper examines these three scenarios: the funeral as ritual, food as a cultural component and accommodating food preferences across cultures. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
